What's Reducing Carbon Emissions? Natural Gas

Daily Beast -- In a surprising turnaround, the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere in the U.S. has fallen dramatically to its lowest level in 20 years, and government officials say the biggest reason is that cheap and plentiful natural gas has led many power plant operators to switch from dirtier-burning coal.

Many of the world's leading climate scientists didn't see the drop coming, in large part because it happened as a result of market forces rather than direct government action against carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere.

Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University, said the shift away from coal is reason for "cautious optimism" about potential ways to deal with climate change. He said it demonstrates that

"@MartinMan - take a deep breath. Sometimes news is worth seeing again."

LOL, Marty is quite the excitable one! Especially when it applies to a subject that bucks the Church of Global Warming.

Less corn because because of the Midwest drought equals less feed for live stock equals less animal FARTS equals less CARBON EMISSIONS.

Yes, natural gas burns cleaner and more efficiently than oil and gas. When environmentally safer and less toxic methods are used to get this gas, then many more people will be pushing for more use in the US.

Exactly. Sure, it may be the same as yesterday but who couldn't love hearing about both our plentiful domestic natural gas - and lower emissions?

And what about the rest of the world? Do the environmental whacks think it doesn't come here from elsewhere too?

Its somewhat of a distraction. Yup, burning natural gas IS MUCH cleaner and less polluting than burning coal, and burning it does release less carbon dioxide than burning coal. But, it is still a serious carbon dioxide source, and if it leaks, its is the catastrophically worse greenhouse gas methane (ie, natural gas) .Google it to see just how awful it is.

Its like saying that the Manson Family next door has been kicked out, but the quiet guy moving in is a petty break-in artist, who sometimes goes off his meds and takes out his extensive gun collection to get back at "them"

Once again it was "as a result of market forces rather than direct government action". That's the way things are supposed to work NOT the government controlling everything 24/7.

Coal or natural gas, it is a trade off.

Power plants' choice of fuel must be used efficiently to effectively reduce carbon emissions.

Reduce pollutants by implementing better, safer and more efficient mining methods of coal and gas.

Plug in any electrical or electronic devices at home only when necessary.
