Toyota Prius May Lead Japan Car Sale Collapse as Subsidies E

Bloomberg -- The Prius hybrid has spearheaded sales growth for Toyota Motor Corp. in Japan for more than a year, helped by government subsidies. The model will likely bear the brunt of plunging demand as the support ends.

“A collapse in sales is unavoidable,” said Hiromi Inoue, the new-car sales chief for Tokyo Toyopet Motor Sales Co. “The daily pace of orders for the Prius is already dropping. We are bracing ourselves for the coming crisis.”

The number of customers signing up to buy a Prius at Tokyo Toyopet’s 66 showrooms has dropped to about eight a day from 20 in June, Inoue said. Industrywide, car sales in Japan are expected to plunge 23 percent in the six months beginning in October from a year earlier, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

Same here with the GM "VOLT". Once (now that) the government subsidy is over they will have to face the fact that noone really wants them and the resale value will have dropped even before they hit the market.

Sort of makes you wonder how many countries have poured money into these businesses. I wonder if anyone but the companies can answer that question. I am in no way anti-business, and I can't fault a company for taking a feed at the govt. trough when it is there for the taking. I just hate the type of "crony capitalism" that John Stossel is always talking about in his blog. The govt. needs to stop picking winners, and business have to be ready for failure if they don't succeed. The idea that I would have to use that obvious statement "ready for failure if they don't succeed" is already laughable.

I'm sorry you failed Toyota, but we can't let you "really fail". Let us give you a green car subsidy to help you succeed even though you failed. Citibank, BoA, AIG, etc. You guys can't fail... even though you have.

The government needs to stop spending our money to help business. If they can't make it on there own then let them fail....

I bought my Prius with NO Government subsidy. If I couldn't afford it, I didn't want a taxpayer handout to get one. All this Government spending has only taken us deeper into debt and now it appears we are heading back into recession. We need to stop with the bailouts and get our fiscal house in order. More Government spending is not the answer.

Keep conserving.

the high number of sales there would also lead to a drop as so many people already have them. you can't keep a high sales number forever.

To bad we just can't buy things on the merits of how they are made and the same for companies. Make quality products, stay in business. Make crap, lose your business.

There are those magic words again--"government subsidies." Why is it that all of this "green" technology require "government subsidies" if it is so good. You wold think that it could stand on its own.
