Love the innovation and technological advances Tesla has made that shatter what had been the biggest single drawback and obsticle to mainstreaming of EVs... range limitation. 265 to 300 miles on a single charge is a good start but the exorbitant cost of their Model Service sedan and expanding the range without adversely affecting the quality, performance and price need to be their primary focus if they are going to be seen as anything but a toy for the rich city and urban dwellers... That said I would love to have one!

Endoman5000,
You are forgetting that the 30 min charge at those charging stations gives you 100mi, not the full 260mi range.
and that solar power will not be enough juice when there is a line at the charging station, like the one at my local gas station.

at what cost? and how long did it take?
"the team's Twitter feed revealed their last position was just shy of New Orleans."
So they started dec 26 and they have not gone half the way?
LA to NYC= 2,790 mi, 41 hours portland to nyc= 2,895 mi, 42 hours
2800mi/ 25 mi/hr= 112 hrs; or 11 days on moped. and these guys have taken 11 days so far.
Any competent bike rider can make 150 miles per day (6hr days) 2800mi per day/150= 18.6 days

"Wake up people, all electric vehicles aren't the answer to our fuel problems. They will overload our antique electricity distribution grid and too much electricity is still generated by burning DIRTY coal."
Wow this is a funny statement considering that the newest charging stations Telsa is putting out there in AZ and NM are SOLAR POWERED! And you can charge in 30 minutes, which is about the same time it would take for a family to get and eat food at a fast food restaurant.
Let's first start with educating ourselves about the new technology before we start with the bashing.

If we all had electric cars now, how much oil would we consume to provide the electricity we would need? Will our light and heating bills go up?

A Tesla SuperCharger charges at 90KW, so you can get 150 mile charge in 30 minutes. http://www.teslamotors.com/supercharger

> "The Telsa Model X requires a deposit of $40,000 (FORTY THOUSAND), the others require a deposit of $5,000??? "
No, that's incorrect. The "signature series" has a $40K deposit, regular production models are $5000 deposit. This was true for the Model S also.

How far can they travel each day? If they can go 265 miles on a charge, but it takes overnight (or several hours) to get a full recharge for another 265 miles, it will take two to three times as long to get anywhere than a gasoline vehicle that can travel 600-700 miles per day.

We need to actively pursue increased use of abundant, ultra clean American natural gas on the form of CNG or LNG as our primary alternative to all oil based fuels.
