Federal and state taxes on gasoline are enough! These taxes should also be restricted for use on roads, bridges or other VOTER approved transportation projects.

You don't need to tax gasoline in times like these. It is already difficult for many people. Governments should not make things worse for people.

You will see a lot of gasoline taxes increasing in the months ahead, everyone is looking for new/more revenues to get budgets back in balance. Let me clarify that, state governments are trying to balance their budgets. The federal government couldn't care less at the current rate. We are in for a heap of trouble in a few more years when these deficits catch up with us.

Here we go again making people who drive pay the price for the lost of property tax. How about taxing the companies who have the money like the oil companies.

Need to bury this article! If my mayor sees it then we are done for. He's just looking for another revenue stream for his projects & always on the backs of the taxpayers.

Unless the municipal gas tax covers a large geographic area, people will simply buy their gas in neighboring municipalities without the tax and some of the gas stations in the taxing municipality might be driven out of business.
This always happens when there is a significant tax difference when crossing a state border. With a municipal border, many more people are close enough to the tax "border" to make it worth while.

This is bogus! Local municipalities waste the most moeny on corruption, favoritism, and nepotism. They largely feel immune to voters because of this!

Local governments have been just as good as our federal government in wasting monies over the years. Now that things have gotten bad all over and they can't keep up they want to hit us some more to make up for their overspending.

Gov't begets more gov't which begets higher union pay which begets higher taxes to pay union wages / pensions
the above continues until voters put a stop to it. oh, wait a mintue, 60% of votes don't pay federal income taxes. forget it, go back to paragraph #1.

Just put $1.00 tax on a gallon of fuel. People will drive more efficiently, thus dropping foreign oil reliance. And people will probably start walking those short distances to shops etc. This will bring down the amount of fat/unfit people out there, less strain/expense on hospitals !

So far his "help" has just dug us deeper into debt and given us higher unemployment. I'd rather have him work on his golf game than screw up the country any worse than he already has.

With property taxes falling, these local governments have to find a way to keep their tax revenues up to support the services they've promised to provide.

It's worse in Canada. Calgary hiked up gas 2 cents a litre (about 7.6 cents for your gallon) to pay for roads about 5 years ago. More often than not, the spread between my little town and the city is double that.
Lately the spread is 6 cents (23 cents for a US gallon). Is it any wonder as to why I haven't filled up in the city in over a year?
