Rivals take aim at Toyota customers amid recall

Reuters -- DETROIT/FRANKFURT - Toyota Motor Corp's (7203.T) largest rivals are declaring open season on the automaker at a time when the industry leader is seen as most vulnerable in its largest market.

Ford Motor Co (F.N) and Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) said on Friday they are rolling out incentives targeting Toyota customers, looking to win sales as Toyota is reeling from a suspension of sales of most of its line-up in the United States due to a massive safety recall.

The companies are following the lead of General Motors Co GM.UL, which on Wednesday began offering Toyota customers payouts of up to $1,000 or zero-percent financing for up to five years if they trade in a Toyota for a GM vehicle.

Duh? Of course Toyota's rivals are going to pounce. It is exactly what happened when Ford had the issue with the roll overs. No surprises here.

It's a dog-eat-dog world out there -- no one is surprised by rivals taking advantage of Toyota's downfall in the auto industry.

It's time for other automakers to capitalize... I don't blame them. I'm Toyota would do the exact same thing if they were in there position. It's all just business - you make a huge mistake, and you have to pay for it!

If the playing field were level Ford would top Toyota with every vehicle in their line just as GM would. Wheels can fall off of a Toyota or Honda and they would still get better marks from the ones who "test" these vehicles. They must be be rolling in the dough for these marks as the government has been after Toyota for years for quality issues. I know a couple here who think Honda is the best and think this even though they have had far more trouble with them than their F-150 and the the Dodge 1500 before it and the Chevy 1500 before that. Just a note, the vehicles were the same year in all cases. So don't give me this crap that Toyotas and Hondas are better than the vehicles made here.

This sounds like normal business practice in an effort to gain market share. Thank heaven for free enterprise. Still, GM, Ford and Chrysler have a difficult up hill climb if they choose to match the quality levels of Toyota. I know: I have owned a Saturn, a Pinto and a Plymouth in my life time. I still have my last Plymouth, but there a lot of items that continue to require fixes. I rarely have anything to fix on my Corolla except normal wear items (tires, batteries, oil, filters, etc).

When a manufacturer comes up with a problem, it is natural that the competitors want to use it to make some money. This can be very true since Toyota has such a large problem during a time with such a bad sales market.

All of these other car companies had better tread lightly because they never know when the next recall will hit them and paybacks are hell.

Of course Toyota's rivals will be out to get the better hand of the woes they are having right now. Plus, their rivals will also be given incentives to Toyota customers hoping to get their business. But Ford needs to be careful as in 1996, they had a higher recall than Toyota.

Toyota's competitors will still have a hard time taking away customers because they still need to produce a product that consumers want and desire. It's been years since they've produced a string of winning vehicles that can overtake Toyota and other foreign automakers. But time will tell if they're able to overtake Toyota....
