Restored muscle car helps grieving father spread the word on dangers of distracted driving

MLive -- West Michigan car buff Jeff Steere was walking through a muscle car show in Rosemont, Ill., with his buddy, Fred Beyer, last November when they stopped to look at a frost green Camaro with unusual wheel covers – not the kind you would normally find on a muscle car.

That’s when they met Todd Nelson, who explained that the wheel covers and the car were a tribute to his 18-year-old son, Taylor Nelson, who died in a 2009 car accident. His son was killed when his car was rear-ended by a 22-year-old driver who was texting while driving.

Nelson, of Seymour, Wis., explained he and his son had picked out the wheel covers and the paint job while rebuilding the Camaro as a father-son project. The grieving father was now showing the project he completed on his own as a memorial to his son and as a w

By the way, I previously owned a green 6 cylinder 69 Camaro like their project car but I never knew the color name was Frost Green.

I am sorry for his loss. I am glad he has found a way to deal with it. I hope he hasn't abandoned a wife at home to work through this alone. Distracted driving. Some people just don't learn until it costs them money. I think they believe themselves superior to the rest of us and thus are capable of doing everything wrong with no consequences. I think those people are stupid and the odds just haven't caught up with them yet. There needs to be much more done to catch and punish distracted drivers. People will stop if they know they are likely to get an expensive ticket. I've seen it in driving behavior. Everyone speeding on a road until they enter the city with a reputation of ticketing speeders, then they all slow down to the speed limit. Of course this can stop when enforcement stops. Michigan used to enforce the rule about trucks driving only in the right lane except to pass on highways. Enforcement was strong through the 1980's. So, in the early 1990's trucks on I-94 always stayed to the right. Then enforcement stopped. By 2000, you frequently found trucks cruising in the middle lane. Now, you hardly ever see trucks using the right lane except to exit. When you do see a truck in the right lane, they have plates from far away states. Since cops are now too lazy to ticket anyone, either they need to go back to the quota system for tickets, or have cameras that can differentiate driver behavior then they can flag an offender and have a police employee review the tape and photos to issue tickets. Just refer to California to how to do this successfully, as they have used cameras for years. Then use a lot more of them than they do in California, because cameras are much cheaper today, and if you've driven in California you will find drivers doing 100 mph until they get to where the camera is, slow for the camera, then resume their stupid speed. Yes, they do this in heavy traffic.
