Nissan chief: Electric car adoption to be gradual

journalstar.com -- The head of the Nissan-Renault alliance said Thursday that customers' adoption of electric vehicles will be a slow and gradual process, with traditional gasoline-powered cars continuing to dominate the market for many years.

Carlos Ghosn predicted that about 10 percent of vehicles sold worldwide in 2020 will be powered by electricity. The rest will be powered by gasoline, diesel, hybrids and other fuel sources.

"We're not going to take the market by storm," Ghosn said of electric vehicles. "Electricity is going to complement oil."

What we need is to drill now, drill here, plus nuclear power plants while the new system is being developed.

it's time to get the power grid mess updated. It's been the same as it has been almost since the days of Edison.

Ghosn is correct as it will be a gradual adoption to EVs as the technology has not improved significantly over the last century in comparison to gasoline engine.

Exactly. Complement, oil. And over more time, will continue to do so, as more technologies evolve, and we use less and less automotive fuel.

Just like the "newer" sources of energy, the powering of vehicles will be a gradual increase over time.

all electrics should be GPS equipped, because the range of battery charge can fade fast, like a cell phone battery or a laptop battery. Next we will need spare battery to go with spare tire.

I think hybrids will come first. The distribution system and battery issues will need to be solved before we see widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

It takes a car company about 10 yrs to change directions and tool up for a new product.... especially to change from gas to electric.

Burning coal to generate electricity will "help our climate".

Why is burning coal better for the climate than burning gasoline?

If the value and price were there the transition would be swift. However, the price of the electric cars and hybrids do not currently make good economic sense.

We've been on oil for over 100 years.
I suspect its a good guess we will be on oil for many years to come.
Even with electric/hybrid/diesel/hydrogen/natural gas/etc/etc.

Ya think? It will take time for the infrastructure to become available to support electric cars. That has to come first before people will buy them en mass.

then give an incentive tax break to buy electric

Electric drive systems likely are the way of the future, but full electric in terms of battery-only driven cars will be slow to be adopted. They will always have a feel of being tethered by cord to a recharging station which at the moment is limited to converters and specialized equipment that stay away from the car (unless you have 12-24 hours for 110V slow charging).

Would I own a battery electric? yes, in the form of a mini-car for around town, and only as a supplement for now, not my only vehicle.
