New Fiesta makes small cars cool

CNET -- Ford unveiled the next generation of its Fiesta subcompact, along with its high-performance ST counterpart, at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.

With an innovative new engine option and its own MyFord Touch system, the new Fiesta should be a high-tech fuel sipper.

Last week Ford handed out specifications for a new engine option in the 2014 Fiesta, a 1-liter 3-cylinder Ecoboost already in use in Europe. The engine sounds ridiculously small by U.S. standards, but its turbo and direct injection help it achieve 123 HP, which should be more than enough to propel the little car.

At the same time, Ford expects it to get stellar fuel economy. The highway rating should come in well over 40 mpg, given the size of the engine.

Ford also rolled out the ST version of the Fiesta...producing 197 HP

I should of elaborated a little more. At 65-70MPH 40+MPG is no big problem. On the other hand... locking the cruise on 80MPH for 100 miles or more with long uphill / downhill grades... the mileage suffers. Highest average MPG on a tankful was over 44. Will a smaller engine with a Turbo help ??? (Hope so)

Not as cool as the muscle cars, but still... if oldhillbilly is right, it's sad that the mpg is going down instead of going up in these models.

It should achieve 50 MPG EPA ratings. The diesel version would achieve over 80, but Ford does not want to bring it in, for some reason. Could Big Oil be putting pressure on them?
