Your article will get a lot of interest from folks who are paying high amounts for fuel and consumer goods. The taxes charged by each state is a good place to find fault; like the 68 cents per gallon in New York. But you are dead wrong when you cite oil companies for making excessive profits (average 9% on earnings) when other industries make so much more (McDonalds 20%, Google 30%, etc). The AMOUNTS for oil companies are high because the VOLUMES are high.
The oil companies are already paying more money in TAXES than anyone else. Why not cite the Federal government for the excessive amounts that they charge the oil companies for taxes (which we pay because they are merely passed on to the consumer) and the taxes that the FED charges for highway use taxes when they squander this money in other areas without repairing roads and bridges.
The "Tax breaks" are legitimate business deductions which ALL mining companies take (Not only oil and gas) and this is to encourage investment. How many exploratory wells would these companies drill if they experienced "dry wells" and received no tax deductions? What do you suppose would happen to the price of fuel at the pump when you remove these tax breaks? And WHO would get this money? The consumer? No! The very government which is wasting our tax dollars buying votes to make their future more secure.
Oil executives get paid well for what they do and if you are capable of dealing with EPA regulators, etc. and still make a profit, then by all means give it a try. The oil company stock holders are the one's who determine the salaries of their execs. So it appears that you are wrong on 3 out of 4 counts. Get the State of New York to lower their taxes and you will have accomplished much.

It would be interesting to see what happens if the country gets split in half, one where taxes on gas are removed, but road work is completely funded by big oil, and the other half where big oil subsidies are removed and perhaps gas taxes raised, but where roads continue to be paid for by the government.

The taxes on fuel were for repairing and constuction of roads. To many tax dollars have been diverted to other projects.
However, part of the problem are the result of greed on the part of chains. I live in a border state. We have one major chain which controls the prices of fuel. Our fuel tax is 22 cents per gallon, the ajoining states tax is 33 cents per gallon. The price of fuel at this chain in one state is $3.91. The price in my state is $3.88. The chain stations in Iowa are making an extra 8 cents per gallon when you figure in the 11 cent difference in tax.
A town in our county that does not have one of these chain stations has a gas price of $3.79.

And the "For Sale" signs on the front lawns rival the candidate poster boards. We are a Democratic State with a Democratic governor but we have a "corrupt" legislature.

So how much should they make? Based on investment or sales. If they made no money, how much lower would the price be? My estimate is around $.12 a gallon. But why would they invest and be in business with no profit?

Railing about oil profits and ignoring tax inputs to the cost of a gallon of fuel is just plain old-fashioned dumb.

No one seems to look at the taxes on gas...I remember in Florida many of the stations were posting the taxes paid per gallon and were ordered by a court to remove them....

We need to reduce ALL taxes, but in order to do that we have to first reduce the size of government which means entitlement spending!!!!!! Good luck with that!
