Musings: PwC Says Shale Oil 'The Next Energy Revolution' - Really?

Rig Zone -- Economists with the worldwide accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) have just published an interesting and thought-provoking analysis of the long-term impact of shale oil on the global economy. While one might question some of the shale oil production numbers that evolve from the PwC analysis, the final couple of pages of the report, which focus on "opportunities and challenges for governments and companies" and touch on topics we have been devoting significant thought to with respect to the implications of the growth in output from unconventional oil and gas plays, is what we found most intriguing.

PwC begins its report with a brief review of the history to date of shale oil and shale gas in the United States. The economists point out that shale oil production has grown

As fracking provides the shale oil and natural gas for the next energy revolution, that revolution will provide the stimulus for the economic recovery this country so desperately needs.

Musings?

This article provoked images of a future earth with all the natural gas and oil deposits sucked from it's innards looking more prune-like than round.

Will earth remain on course as it orbits the sun?
There have already been an increase in earthquake activity in regions where they were relatively rare.
Will all this fracking cause massive shifting of the tectonic plates?

Is anyone looking into this possibility?

Yes, really.

I do have an objection to one item in this article. E3: Prices could fall significantly. Yes, prices can fall. No, they will never again fall significantly. Oil producers rely on the high prices. If the price starts to fall, then production starts to shut down. this will follow so that gasoline will never fall below $3 a gallon, and in 5 years will never fall below $4 a gallon. By the year 2030, gasoline will never go below $5 a gallon ever again.

This is the same time frame for US energy independence.
