INSIGHT-Catch me if you can - oil sanctions against Iran

Reuters -- International sanctions have a patchy history, and Iran's oil elite have been dodging them for decades.

As Washington and its allies tighten the screws on Tehran over its nuclear programme, Iran is coming up with new ways to sell its oil - offering special deals to allies China and India, delivering oil to clients and swapping it for gold and grain.

Tehran may also be devising ways to make its oil more saleable on international markets, switching it between tankers and blending crudes to disguise the origin, oil trading and shipping sources have told Reuters. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity to business relationships.

Washington, London and Brussels are doing their best to put up obstacles, but Iran is market savvy, these traders said,...

Sanctions, what a joke. Do they really work? Not really because the country just finds other ways to survive. It's just a political way with word to make people think politicians are really doing something other than sitting on their butt and collecting a check

The sanctions are affecting the world economies, including those that support the sanctions. The evil genius overthere has 50% of the world's sympathy, 25% of the gray area and 25% that hate them. I would say that their profit loss is probably 25%. At least 50% of the Arab world is helping them sell their oil. It seems to be a long, drawn, convoluted and obfuscated futile effort. Not that I care much about it. I'm just an observer.

Whatever the sanctions or taxes, if they are too high (or too stringent), it will create a "black market" (organized crime) to avoid it. This is why all taxes should be levied at the point of purchase. Set the taxes too high, people don't buy, and revenue decreases.

Obama would see the same result if he gets his wish to "tax the rich." The truly rich would find ways to avoid the tax by investing (or moving) overseas, or investing in passive markets (commodities, etc.) that do not create jobs - reducing the government's revenue with a multiplier effect.

Iran produces about half the amount of oil that the United States produces. We do not need Iranian oil. However, other countries in the world are buying the oil. The embargo may not be working 100%, but it sure makes Iran work harder to sell it where it can.

Oil is too important, Iran and any buyers that really want it will figure out a way, but we still need to know who is supporting Iran.

The value of their currency has dropped severly, it is costing more to survive, and some day the people will wake up, and demand for change. I just hope it is not the same kind that we are having.

Sanctions are worthless. Iran is already working around them.
Ahmadinejad isn't worried about them. The empty chair needs to be replaced.
