Grassley Says EPA Should Allow Ethanol Blend to Rise to 11%

Bloomberg -- U.S. Senator Charles Grassley said the Environmental Protection Agency should allow some higher percentage of ethanol in gasoline if it delays a decision on the industry’s request to allow the ethanol blend to rise by half.

In March, Growth Energy, an ethanol industry trade group asked the EPA for a waiver to allow the ratio of ethanol in gasoline to rise to 15 percent from 10 percent. The agency must make a decision by Dec. 1. There’s speculation that the EPA may delay a ruling, citing the need for more testing, Grassley said.

“But I would also go back with a more specific request that if you can’t make a decision on E-15, at least make a decision on E-11 or E-12,” Grassley, an Iowa Republican, said today on a conference call with reporters.

Too much expense to implement for the benefit. Leave it at 10% and have E85 as an alternative. Ethanol from corn is too expensive too.

Not many people outside of ethanol producing states want any increase in the ethanol content.

Every little bit helps, I suppose, but at what cost? Poorer gas mileage? Bad for regular gasoline engines? Where does it all stop? Where does it all end?

Pork barrel legislation for Grassley. Ethanol is less efficient than oil and just raises our costs.

And from all across the cornfields in Grassley's home state of Iowa, we can hear loud "amens!" Many of the rest of us would prefer to use undiluted 100% petroleum as the fuel of choice.

we've helped out the ethanol group enough already. Need to move to more renewable alternative sources that don't impact food supplies and prices.

Stop letting the radicals run everything and start drilling for oil in our own back yards where we already know it is and we can solve all these problems..Changing Ethanol from 10% to 15% isn't going to do it.

Major problem with ethanol is the fact that most engines do not run at optimum performance on ethanol, much less more %.

More than half of all the states grow significant amounts of corn. Therefore we will never see Congress vote to get rid of corn based ethanol, and the huge subsidies the taxpayers pay to make ethanol economically viable as a motor fuel. Another government rip-off of consumers and taxpayers.

Since we us a LOT of gas in this country, even a 1% reduction is a significant amount of ethanol. As long as the ethanol is NOT from corn, then I'm for it. (But Grassley is in it for the corn-based stuff. Follow the money!)

Oooooh, ONE percent! Wow! What a life-changer.

How about quit taxing the hell out of everything and then leaving it up to what actually WORKS?

Companies have died because people are so incredibly stupid. Chrysler is one good example. They had a vehicle with a turbine engine that could run on basically ANY fuel DECADES ago!

Editing to add that you idiots who want to use food crops for fuel are just that. Idiots.

masrod...Sadly Grassley is one of the few good things that Iowa has left going for it. The Governor is a whack job and the congressmen are lunatics. Lets not even get into the states supreme court! Better hang on to Grassley or risk getting something like the marxist liberal memebers of the hussien regime moving in. Seems like ol'Chuck is about the only line of common sense left in the state.

I'm VERY sorry to hear you were born in Iowa, I will try not to hold it against you. Now back too topic. If you follow the path of corn from the farm to the plant to your tank. you will see that ethanol is very good for you. What seems to be lost in all of this is that the trail does not end in your tank. The chain ends back on the farm. The corn that is used for ethanol has a by product known as distillers grain. These grains are fed to livestock as a VERY good feed stock that is more easily digested and thus cheapens production costs. I can GUARANTEE a 50% instant increase in all meat, dairy and poultry products if ethanol goes away. Burgers, bacon and eggs will go through the roof, MARK MY WORDS.

Ethanol may not be made from corn you can eat, but that corn is darn sure grown on land that could be producing edible crops.

Ethanol costs more to produce per gallon than gas does and does not deliver as much energy out put as gas, derived and refined from oil does.

God bless the American farmers who are for the first time in decades seeing the light at the end of the tunnel due to ethanol. I do not promote or denounce the use of Ethanol but I do think its so awesome to see our real American farming families finally getting a break. Again to those who keep saying it...ETHANOL IS NOT MADE FROM CORN YOU CAN EAT!!!! NO ONE IS GOING TO GO HUNGRY AND FOOD PRICES ARE NOT RISING DUE TO THE CORN USED FOR ETHANOL!! It is non-edible field corn.

At least Grassley knows that corn is important to Iowa's economy. Ethanol isn't a good place for it, though. I get the impression that big donations from corporate interests speak louder than the corn farmers in Iowa.

Grassley is promoting, because it affects his constituents in a big way. I was born in Iowa, but this Ethanol, CRA... is just that "garbage". Have you noticed your fuel economy going down by around 10%. We are not saving fuel at this rate, we are using MORE!!!

Say no to your Congressmen and Senators. This is backwards and is another tax on the American Auto owner.

Grow corn for the world, not for fuel... it's BUNK!
