Cuba's Oil Quest to Continue, Despite Deepwater Disappointment

National Geographic Daily News -- An unusual high-tech oil-drilling rig that's been at work off the coast of Cuba departed last week, headed for either Africa or Brazil. With it went the island nation's best hope, at least in the short term, for reaping a share of the energy treasure beneath the sea that separates it from its longtime ideological foe.

For many Floridians, especially in the Cuban-American community, it was welcome news this month that Cuba had drilled its third unsuccessful well this year and was suspending deepwater oil exploration. (Related Pictures: "Four Offshore Drilling Frontiers") While some feared an oil spill in the Straits of Florida, some 70 miles (113 kilometers) from the U.S. coast, others were concerned that drilling success would extend the reviled reign of the Castros, long-time dictator Fi

It is also a poster boy for why none of the big oil companies are interested in drilling of the US East Coast as some idiot politicians propose. You have the same geology all the way to Halifax and off the west coast of Florida known as the Destin (Dustin for all the dry holes in the 80's)Dome. Hibernia is associated with Greenland and Newfoundland tectonically not Labrador and south.

Cuba has proved that any one wanting to drill off Virginia and the Carolias is mentally incompetent.
"Drill baby drill" only works when there is oil there in the first place contrary to what some people here think.

For 50 years the embargo have not worked, a new plan is needed. Moving to reduce the embargo will establish a path for the US to influence a peaceful government transition in Cuba. This could start before the Castros are no longer leading the country. Reducing the embargo will also reduce Chavez's influence on Cuba.

"The regime's latest efforts to bolster their tyrannical rule through oil revenues was unsuccessful," said U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Florida Republican who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee"

How is she so blinded that she can't see:

"As with every aspect of its economy, its choices for making up the shortfall are sorely limited by the 50-year-old United States trade embargo.

At what could be a time of transition for Cuba, experts agree that the failure of deepwater exploration increases the Castro regime's dependence on the leftist government of Venezuela, which has been meeting fully half of Cuba's oil needs with steeply subsidized fuel." If she WANTS the Castros gone, she should be advocating we get rid of the embargo which has done nothing in 50 years to get them out of power. They'll both be dead and the Cuba-American community will still say we need the embargo.

Three deepwater drilling efforts and no success? What is going on? Incompetence on the part of the drillers/geologists or is the government drilling and hoping?

There are six billion dollars of unresolved claims against Cuba, and besides the US wants to look tough.

So we have severely limited trade with Cuba.

The failure may not stop the Castros, but hopefully it'll slow them down a bit. I wish them much luck (all of the bad variety) in their next drilling endeavor.

As long as the Communists are running Cuba, they will continue to be an economic basket case.

Which is a GOOD thing.

Unfortunately, the national disaster that was Election Day 2012 has a President whose economic instincts are more aligned with Cuba's than the free market.
