CdnL: thanks for the Canadian perspective. Something lots of folks in the US seem too often to forget.

Size of our respective countries is also a factor; America has approx 313 million people, compared to the Cdn population of approx 35 mil. The American tax base is much larger to pay for your gov't projects; granted some of your projects are far more expensive, particularly defense. Yes, we have gov't health car plan; however this is really a none issue, (for lack of a better term). Canada is a democracy, just like America, same as England and Australia. If Cdn's paid for non-gov't plans (private) as in the U.S, we would be paying far more in health care; taking even more money out of our pockets then at present. Some posters on this site, seem to be fixated on the fact we are a socialist state due to fact of our health care. Sorry, it's my personal belief that if America had a universal plan for the health of your nation you would eventually be a healthier nation. Presently the greed of American health care providers are bleeding money out of Americans. Overall we pay significantly less money for a extremely good and robust health system. Some here are scared with their preconceived concepts of communism and/or socialism and it is colouring their thoughts and comments. Canada as a small population must pay to sustain this vast democratic society. Thankfully we do not have to pay for such a large military debt that has been incurred since the WWII, as in America.

Much of that destination charge has to do with distance from a set point without regard to actual transport distance or place of manufacture or assembly. We in Wisconsin dairy farmers deal with that wrt milk prices which are set at so much per mile from Eau Claire, WI even if the milk was produced just 5 miles away. The rate itself has no bearing on shipping costs as they are much lower than the rate used. So why do farmers on the West Coast get paid so much more for their milk than those in Wisconsin? The rate should be equal to the average transport cost for the distance it truly has to move. Else everyone gets the same base price.

That is a bad deal to me. I would go to the U.S. to buy in that case.

Whenever I complain about the amount of taxes I pay, I think about how much worse the Canadians have it, and how really fortunate we are here in the good old U.S. of A.

Those Canooks better get all over the big 5 and kick some butt. I would not stand for that sort of treatment either. That's just wrong. Don't put up with it Canada. Especially because they screw you on gas up there too. Selling by the Liter, What the hell is that about? Everybody knows gas is to be sold by the Gallon.

We already know this and feel for them. We are also having to pay more than we should for Diesel especially in the USA because they are Exporting large amounts out of the USA.

Yea, it SHOULD be investigated. And while you're at it, don't stop with vehicles - investigate why we pay more for everything here in Canada, including groceries. People who live anywhere near the border here cross for everything from groceries to vet services for their pets! I know a contractor here who buys all his building supplies stateside and saved $80,000 last year!

We pay more for everything: cars, gas, electronics, books, greeting cards, stuff in Walmart, you name it. The cars thing is a real piss off, especially when Hawaiians can buy a car made in Ontario, cheaper than someone in Ontario.

What sort of a “comment” is that??? Do you somehow feel that this article is inappropriate for Newsville. If so, please read the posting guidelines.

Hmmm.... The Canadians have a legitimate gripe -- The price disparity is clearly not fair. It remains to be seen what they'll do about it.....

We're just used to getting hosed. It's not taxes. Corporate taxes are lower here. There is no manufacturing tax. When they sell the car to the dealer, all the taxes paid for the parts (right down to the tax paid on office staples) is rebated to the manufacturer.
But notice how it costs $1465 to deliver it down the street and only $810 to deliver it to Hawaii. The gouging has been going on for years.

Costs for manufacturing in Canada are irrelevant when you consider that the same car sells for up to thousands less in the US. In other words, if it costs x amount of dollars to produce, then the manufacturers would have to retail it for y. They would NOT take a loss by selling it cheaper in the US. Therefore, the US prices are profitable. In that case, there is no other factor to determine than plain greed. Toyota Prius is another eye-gouger that's a lot more expensive here in Canada.

Interesting, how do salaries compare for similar workers? Do Canadian workers make more than US workers in the same category?
It does seem "wrong" that someone living next to the factory has to pay more than someone halfway round the world, especially considering the expense involved in shipping a car.
Greed?
