Blocking Pipeline Carries Legal Risk in E. Texas

Downstream News -- Protesters trying to save the world by sitting in trees or blocking equipment used to build the Keystone XL oil pipeline are learning that environmental activism can be a ticket to lengthy jail time in East Texas.

Matthew Almonte, Glen Collins and Isabel Brooks landed in jail in Tyler on Dec. 3, charged with misdemeanour criminal trespass, resisting arrest and illegal dumping, following efforts to stop work on the TransCanada Corp. pipeline. Each has asked for a reduction in the $65,000 (U.S.) bond that must be posted to get out pending trial, without success.

The trio joined more than 30 others arrested since October near Tyler and Nacogdoches as they tried to halt work on the $7.6 billion (U.S.) pipeline that would bring products of Alberta oilsands to Houston-area refineries.

Greenpeace, PETA as well as the tree huggers in WA and OR all know that they face possible jail. It's the risk one takes when expressing one's opinion as part of one's civil rights (for those who would rather manure pile the rights of non-whites in the US, let it be said, these are rights that are applicable to all in the US of A).

It doesn't matter if they are activists or not, it is time the courts started coming down hard on anyone breaking any law for whatever reason.

Enviro-nuts aren't much welcome in Texas - even if they aren't outsiders. The fuss over the pipeline is silly anyway. I've got a gas line on my property. If it wasn't marked, you wouldn't know it was there. The cattle couldn't care less.

The problem for the pipeline builders is that not all of it runs through east Texas.
