Anyone here a member of the Speedway Rewards?

I just joined yesterday and was looking at the available rewards. I then started doing some math and found out something they may not want you to catch on to.

If you earn 1750pts. you can get .10 off per gallon of gas. (there are 2 other pt levels for .25 and .50 off per gallon, but the math on all 3 is equal). This seems like a great deal when you get points for doing things you normally do anyway. Here is the part they may not want you to know. You can get a $100 gift card for 66000 pts. If you have a 20 gallon tank and save .10/gal you save $2. To Save $100 with this discount it will take 87,500pts! You lose 21,500pts by getting the gas discount! On a 12 gal. tank you lose 79,833 pts.! That is more than another $100 gift card!

The secret is to have a little patience and you can actually double the reward you get from Speedway.

Wow! Speedway sure is great! They have a credit card that you can get another 4% - 8% off of all Speedway purchases on TOP of the $1 off for purchasing a gift card. When combining all 3 discounts (including the $.02 off for using the rewards card) you save over $.20 off per gallon.

I love it.

Makes Speedway cheaper even after they've jumped up in price, a lot of the time.

BTW, a nice little trick to use: When all the Speedways jump up in price, you know the other stations will soon follow. So seek out the cheapest price for you and go to that station before they all jump up.

Speedwaysux, with the free Speedy Rewards card you get 10 points for each dollar spent not one for each dollar as you used in your calculations. So when you spend $175 you get 1750 points which will get you a 10 cent per gallon discount on up to 25 gallons. That saves you $2.50 no matter how you look at it. Also when you join you get 500 free points so the first 1750 points come's quicker and cost's you only $125.

Speedwaysux:
You don't need to get the gift card to earn points. You get a speedway rewards card free just by filling out an application. You earn points for gas that you purchase on a credit card or cash. You also get points for anything you might buy in the store. They are running a promotion currently that just by swiping your membership card you save .02/gallon

If you buy the $50 cash card right now they are giving reward members a $1 discount (works out to about .05-.06/gallon) They are also giving a 500pt bonus. This means by getting a rewards card and buying a $50 cash card you are saving about .07/gallon and earning 1000pts toward other discounts.

Understand I am not promoting Speedway here. I go to where the gas is cheapest and offers me the best deal. Currently Speedway works for me. I am posting this information for the people that do get gas at Speedway and may or may not have the rewards card. I have to buy gas anyway, i have a 180mile round trip commute every day. If I spend my money at Speedway, where it is often cheapest in this area, they will reward me with $100 in gas if I am patient and earn the 66,000pts. In my opinion getting $100 for stuff I do anyway, is a pretty good idea.

I cringe a little when I see someone pull up to the pump and don't use a reward card. If I could catch them quick enough I would say "Here, slide this card in before your credit card and you will save .02/gallon."

I also know that not everyone has the time to look at the program offers and calculate stuff out. Since I took the time, I thought I would share the knowledge, which is what I thought this message forum was about.

wamps: You are correct, you normally don't get points for buying the card, it is a special promotion they are running this month. You can check out their website for details Speedway Website

It's my understanding that you don't get the points when you buy the Gift Card but when you use it. Unless there is a new program that I am not aware of that's the way it's been in the past.

There is a 2 cents rollback at the pump thru 7-31-06 when you swipe your Rewards card.

I did some calculating of my own... since I have a 24gl tank, I didn't even look at the $100 gift card offer.

If I bought a $50 gift card and filled my van with one each time, I'd earn 500 pts, instead of the 70 for a $70 fillup. I would have to do 125 fillups to earn 8,750 pts using the 1 pt per $1 routine! lol

I would need to buy the $50 gift card and fill up 18 times (9,000 pts) to earn the 50 cents per gallon off reward (8750 pts).

After having spent $1,265 to earn that reward, on a 24 gallon fillup, I would save $12.

That's more business, with very little return, then I'm willing to give Greedway, even after taking advantage of the 500 pt/$50 gift card. I'll keep driving past Greedways, thank you.

You have to do the math on it.

I calculated it against a 12 gallon tank of gas.

12 gallons at .10 off/gallon = $1.20 and 1750pts or 1458pts per dollar
12 gallons at .50 off/gallon = $6 and 8750pts. or 1458pts per dollar
25 gallon at .50 off/gallon = $12.50 and 8750pts or 700pts per dollar
$25 Speedy Card = 17500pts or 700pts per dollar
$100 Speedy Card = 66000pts or 660pts per dollar

If you have a larger tank and/or max out the 25 gallon limit the reward is just about equal, but if you have a smaller tank and can't max out the 25 gallons you are better off saving up the rewards.

You have to do what is best for you. If you need the discount quicker, have a bigger tank, or don't go to Speedway often, use the discounts. Otherwise look at saving the points and getting the full value of what you have earned.
