We've been playing around with the idea of improving the layout of the home page of this website. We're looking to get your opinion on this matter.

The main objective is to tie the gas price search box more closely with the search listings, and to shift the gas price listings higher on the page so that you can see more gas price listings without having to scroll.

The report gas prices form is a collaspable form something that you will be able to set as a preference.

We want to hear your feedback!

Please note that it's not 100% functional just yet. We are more looking to get some feedback on the layout of hte page.

See the new proposed page layout in action:
The proposed revisions to the home page

Please vote in the poll about it:
Poll about the new layout

We appreciate your input!

I would have a harder time discerning the time of someone's price posting. Just because I see the actual time posted, it is not easier to discern its age. As it is now, I know how long ago a price was posted. With the new layout, I know what time it was posted, but I have to also make myself more fully aware of what time it is right now (the time at which I am looking at postings) and then figure out how old is the the posted price. It is an extra step in my thougt process.

I like the store link idea with the posted prices.

In BC, the diesel pump handle is usually yellow and the gasoline red, although I don't know what difference the colour of the tabs in GB's make.

There should be an option to save your type of vehicle, that way when you wanna do a trip calculator, it'll be faster and more convenient

Rick52, you can just hover your mouse over the 'hours ago' text to get the time and date. maybe not what you want but i thought I'd let you know in case you didn't.

Is there a glitch with the "This Week's Opinion Poll"? It's still showing last week's poll and it's now after 5pm (PST) on Sunday.

okay, I have got my REPORT section to stay hidden but even with the preferences set to 'Quik search', it comes up "Advanced Search" each time.

oops, here's one...

On a price list page, the Search box shows "Quick" if you are set to advanced, or "Advanced" if you are set to quick.

However, in the preferences area, the terms are "Basic" and "Advanced." The terminology for the same function should be the same everywhere. Either use "Quick" both places or "Basic" both places.

Ooooo. a5, I like that idea too...of a "link" that would jump down the page to put the top of the price list at the top of the window.

Still would like the Search dialog to be collapsible though, also.

okay, here at work I get to see 1 price. but if I hide the REPORT section and change my SEARCH section to 'quick', I can see as much as 9 prices. but the minimization changes don't stick.

"...was more like a portal page..." I mentioned that before the roll-out.

movr: I don't know why but neither at home with FF nor at work with IE can I get the stuff to stay hidden. maybe it has to do with the shortcuts that I use. I have a shortcut set up (since before the roll-out) that takes me straight to my favourite saved search.

I thought the point of this was to "shift the gas price listings higher on the page", I CAN'T SEE A SINGLE PRICE and with the "report" area hidden, I see three.

My suggestion would be to not reserve the screen space for ads that don't show, that way other things can move up into those spaces. or allow us to link to a certain area of the webpage so that it may automatically scroll down to where the desired content is.

I agree; I think not only should it (and other 'applets') be hidden (as a user preference) but also the number of prices should be settable as well; seeing 15 low and 15 high prices is NOT very interesting (to me)!

Ideally, it would be great if the GB.com home page (after login) was more like a portal page (e.g. MyYahoo, MyMSN, MyAOL, iGoogle) where each of the little 'applets' are configurable (on/off, how many items, settable parameters like search area [towns or zip code], etc.). This way it would allow GB.com to accommodate the different styles and usage patterns among the varied GB.com user base!

a5, my hiding of the Report Gas Prices DOES stay hidden across sessions.

I just really, really, really wish the Search entry dialog area just above the list of prices was also "hideable." I have links set up to search the areas I am interested in, but now the Report and Search entry sections show above the resulting list, pushing it down the page. The Report area is collapsible, but the Search entry portion is not.

FYI: JT has added some user preferences for the Gas Prices on the Member Preferences page. Right now you can set four preferences: 'Favorite Station Fuel Types', 'Favorite Station Prices', 'Gas Prices Search', and 'Report Gas Prices'. [It would be nice if this was expanded to include hiding/showing of each of the sections on the home page, the price age (last N hours vs. absolute time), etc.]

I confess I'd like to see links to "home" and "Forum" at the bottom of the page....

FYI: Looks like this discussion is over -- the main page has been changed to this new format (look-and-feel), it's no longer 'proposed' it seems.

[I'm still hoping that JT and Co. add a user preference mechanism to allow GB (logged-in) users to selectively choose which sections we want displayed (or not) on the new home page ... Other preferences would also be nice like how many low/high prices do we want to see, how to display times ('x hours ago' vs. absolute times), default search rather than whole state/metro for high/low list, etc.]

yep, I'm finding that the search isn't working correctly as well.

I keyed in nine stations, and the prices show on the main page, but do not show up in the area search.

Search is broken.

When I select "all stations" and "n" hours it used to show all stations in numeric order from lowest to highest.

Now, it gives the highest & lowest which is what it should do if I select nothing.

Please fix, as I use the all stations feature frequently.

Thanks

ACK !!!

Get the search entry box away from the top of the price list. It is pushing the data to be viewed down, requiring scrolling to see. I don't remember where it was, but this piece of change is a regression.

I don't like the 24 hour time frame at all! Waukesha has about 30 stations and right now only about 8 to 10 prices are showing up! This is not good! What good is this site- if 80 percent of the stations out there- aren't shown up on the board- because the prices are more then 24 hours old?

When you say "There has already been changes on prices at this pump station. We are not posting your information..." are you saying that my information is not appreciated at all even though I understand that I am getting points? This needs to change. Otherwise, I am not opposed to changes you are going to make on your web site.

I sometimes will check the site from my cell phone and I have to hit "next page" 24 or 25 times to reach the top ten. Anything that you can do to put it closer, gets my vote.

I like it and give it a B+. I like the fact that some of the graphics are gone, making it load faster and having to go to another link to post a price that is not on my favorite stations list is not so bad, either.

I **really** don't like replacing the convenient place to enter prices with an advertisement. Sure it increases revenue for website owners. At the same time it makes the site's original mission more difficult to fulfill. It's harder to find the place to report a gas price. And that I really, really hate about it. Otherwise it's about the same. In protest of the newly created ad space, I will steer clear of the home page as much as possible. That simple.

I'm okay with the changes. I like what I see so far. The only complaint that I have with the system right now is dealing with cash vs credit. People are putting the lowest price they see. I don't know how many other people are like me, but I rarely carry much cash. I get money back for charging my gas and it ends up being more than the discount at the pump.. I'd like to see you add a row for cash if we are going to let people put in that number....

Most people don't use this website as a place of social interaction, but we do love the site, and use it several times each week .
In my opinion you are making 2 mistakes.
1) Not putting the favorite stations on the main page for people to post their prices as quickly as possible.
2) Not putting the "time of price spotted" first so that when we head to or from daily activities we can see quickly where and what those good prices are right at the top of the page (I am not interested in sorting through gas prices from 12 to 20 hours ago. What and where are they now!)

We all have busy days, and while we like being helpful to others, a website like this needs to be as convenient as possible to sustain members.
