Most that charge more for credit, charge 10 cents per gallon. Well now that gas prices have dropped in half, doesn't that make the 10 cents twice as expensive? It seems they need to drop this to 5 cents to be fair. To me it's a cost of doing business, there are additional costs to handling large sums of cash as well. Employee pilferage, armed robberies, cash drawer shortages, time to make up deposits and take to bank. Most of the credit card purchases now go straight into the bank account.

As a mother It's safer to be able to use the debit card rather that having to take the children out of the bundled up car seat to run into a gas station - wait in line to pay cash - and then have to go back in to get your change. Its inconvenient and its unsafe. Would you shop at a retail store or restaurant that charged more if you use your debit card??? Probably not! And with all the gas competition you can still buy gas at other stations that don't scam consumers for near the same cost. They want you to pay cash so you come into the store and buy something you wouldn't have otherwise considered purchasing. It's a crock!!!

Would someone educate me on why cash is so bad?!? And ironically, cash discounts are pretty rare. Here in central Ohio only 1 small independent chain, Swifty, offers a $0.05/gallon discount for cash. In fact, thanks to widespread prepay requirements, most stations have a de facto cash penalty. So, when a station bucks the trend and rewards cash customers (which means less credit card merchant fees), whats the problem?
