Uninsured Oklahoma drivers may lose their license plates

GasBuddy Blog -- Nearly 1 in 4 motorists in Oklahoma is uninsured. The state is doing something to correct this problem that places Oklahoma among the states with the highest percentage of uninsured drivers.

The Oklahoma Insurance Dept.(OID) has created a coalition of agencies to fight the problem because it's costing the state $8.8 million annually in lost revenue.

“You take a 10-year snapshot of that, that’s $80 million that could be going to fund other good services,” says John Doak, the IOD Commissioner.

There are more than 560,000 cars in Oklahoma that are uninsured, according to the OID. The Insurance Research Council (IRC) says that's almost 1 out of every 4 Oklahoma motorists lacking the coverage required to drive,...

What ever they can do to protect legal law abiding citizens who do not get cited in accident is a good thing

duane: don't have exact figures at the moment, but pretty high, I'd think. After all, there are lots of migrant workers who shuttle from North to South Florida on a regular basis.

In Boston, if you're uninsured, your car is towed right then and there. You can't promise to park it in your driveway or anything. It's impounded, and the plate is kept at the district station until 1) You get the insurance up-to-date, 2) You get the registration re-instated.

You'll still have to go to court later for this non-arrestable misdemeanor. Some clerk magistrates will give you a break if your paperwork is in order, some won't.

Hey, that's where I live. If the vehicle is impounded you are sure to get the uninsured driver's attention.

This is a breach in personal freedom. Whenever government passes "good, innovative" legislation, it is never good for the common man. More bureaucracy and higher costs for premiums for all. (I have auto insurance by the way. I wouldn't dare be driving around without it.)

OK is behind the times. Here in PA you have to have proof of insurance to purchase a car or renew your vehicle registration.

good to see some more cracking on this. Friend of mine is stuck with over $2.5 million in medical bills when an uninsured motorists t-boned him while he was in the intersection (he had the right of way).
He was nearly dead, the driver causing the wreck walked away with a $200 ticket.
