Toyota advances capabilities of self-driving vehicles

GasBuddy Blog -- In advance of the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas, Toyota showed off a Lexus research vehicle which is equipped with devices that allow it to detect and automatically respond to its surroundings. The car can drive, on its own, through a fairly complex environment, without a person touching the steering wheel or pedals.

Loaded with new technology, cars -- like this experimental Lexus -- could one day be able to drive themselves through traffic. Let's hope they focus on the road and avoid the temptation to text their friends...

The question is, compared to human-guided vehicles, how many accidents will driverless cars get into? And if a driverless car gets involved in an accident: Who is at fault? Who gets charged? Whose insurance goes up? Many questions need answers. Beyond those, will driverless cars be all-electric or gasoline-powered? How will these vehicles help drivers save money? What impact does this have on gas prices?

A computer car with its many sensors, cameras, radars and gps. A vehicle that will go the designated speed, stay in the lane, stop at all stop signs and red lights, watch out for other vehicles, pedestrains, bicycles and various animals that may interfere with the vehicle. With a computer behind the wheel, less accidents and less possible injuries to the driver and/or passengers and less accidents to other vehicles and injuries to other people. The computer is always on and processing data from the various sensors and correcting how and where the vehicle goes. Make sure the computer programming never fails and there is NO dump of the computer system while the vehicle is in operation. The driver is in the vehicle and monitoring the systems and operation of the vehicle. As more and more computer vehicles are in operation it will seem like common place and all those Nay sayers will say O Yeah! Computer vehicles will not be cheap, the auto manufactures will charge as much as they can for them! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Maybe the police could hack into the computer and have the vehicle deliver a wanted crook to a police station. Yah, I know this is not what it was intended for but it could work.
