We in Wisconsin have done this already and now have a 20-30% surplus of generating and transmission capacity. Of course we are paying for this build out too.

They have not been making the big resource companies pay the real cost for energy for to long. They too have the best politicians and regulators money can buy.

I agree with afganed on the wind and sollar energy which is abundant in Australia. As to nuclear plant, if there was one Chernobyl there is always a chance for another, which we don't want to happen.

When it comes to continued uncertainty, Australia sounds a lot like the USA. However, we are about to see the paradigm shift to natural gas as our primary fuel and away from crude oil. Australia does not have the found natural gas reserves.

Economies are on the brink of collapse because all elected officials know how to do is spend. Republicans and democrats are just as guilty in America.

With the majority of the population centered along the coasts in a few cites it should be easy to utilize the inhospitable interior for wind & solar energy projects. Nuclear plants can be built away from major population centers as well.

Gas_Buzzer from South Carolina...
Here we are talking about how Australia needs $92 billion in energy investment and you have to bring up Obama's name, as if he was president of Australia. Not only that, he has no control over what happens in Australia. Furthermore, you decided to make fun of his name.
May I remind you that the President's name is OBAMA without the bizarre embellishment. You needn't agree with him, in fact that you don't, could make this thread more interesting.
However, as a citizen, you owe the office respect. Just the basic stuff you learned at home and teach your children now. Schoolyard puns belong in the schoolyard.

Aren't they paying attention. What is wrong with these folks ? Tax and spend! That is the answer. Australia has tons of resources and land for solar and wind utilization.
Maybe our Obama needs to visit Australia when he visits Indonesia this June.

The solution is to put a big tax on electric usage to get the needed money. When you find out that the high taxes have eliminated the extra demand, scrap the infrastructure expansion and use the money to buy votes by giving the money to "needy" people that can vote - for you. You can apply these schemes to other areas of the economy. Of course, over time you will destroy the country but, as John Maynard Keynes said: "In the long run, we are all dead!"
