Report says China is squeezing U.S. firms out of its massive

Dallas News -- WASHINGTON – U.S. companies are getting squeezed out of the big Chinese wind-power market even as Dallas investors are bringing Chinese firms here via a big wind farm in Texas, according to a new industry report.

"They've used every measure you could possibly think of to enhance production of renewable energy equipment in China," said report author Alan Wolff of the trade law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk won a pledge from the Chinese last fall to drop rules giving preference to Chinese makers of wind-power equipment. But Kirk's office hasn't seen any evidence that the pledge has been carried out, said spokeswoman Carol Guthrie.

Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers are entering the U.S. wind market under a joint venture led by Dallas investor Cappy McGarr.

We complain because the product is not domestic. We complain the domestic product costs too much. We complain wages are not high enough. We complain that people are laid off when cheaper automation can do the same work. I'm starting to see a pattern.

dlr17, great post. Let me also add that we have exported hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of jobs to them. We need to retaliate.

And why would this surprise anyone? China is going to take care of themselves and just use us for their own needs.

The Chinese are protecting and supporting their own industrial companies. It worked for Japan. It will work for China. The U.S. won't do that, because we are too concerned with short-term profits and not concerned with long-term survival of the companies. Look where it has gotten us. We give our technology away to other countries, then buy their products with the technology we gave them, because they are cheaper than the domestic products we developed. Our country is nearly bankrupt now because of it.

any one playing the wind game in TX is a gambler anyway.

the wind tunnel area of the state is about 350 miles from anything.

that's a whole lotta transmission line to try and get power down.
by the time it gets to the trans. center, the line loss is tremendous.
pretty close to an event-only power source for usage.

not entirely smart.

The question is, if we stop buying cheap stuff from China, whose loss it's going to be: ours or theirs? Are we ready for price inflations, even if temporary?

I'm going to introduce a little reality here. First, one of the reasons that Chinese equipment is being used is that US capacity is low in regard to the demand for wind turbines. GE, our principle manufacturer, is about a year behind in meeting demand.

Second, the Chinese government and industry work more closely together (Japan is also an example) so they are able to reach priorities more quickly than we are. When you combine this kind of cooperation with a huge amount of dollars that we ship to the Chinese for just about everything in the consumer sector, you're going to get results.

In the US, in many people's minds, if the government and the private sector work together, you have SOCIALISM. And we can't have that because we will all turn instantly into mindless zombies who immediately look to government for instructions. The merits of the particular case mean nothing: if you have socialism in any way it is bad. Period. NIAOB.

The age where government and industry work more closely together to achieve national goals is upon on. Really it has been here for some time. It's just that we've refused to recognize it. We think that pure capitalism is superior to anything else but it isn't. And the Chinese are proving it to us every day.

The first step is for us is to break away from the values and principles BS we've bogged ourselves down in and remember adherence to pragmatism is what made this country successful. And we'd better get our act together sooner rather than later.

Second, we have to kick out the values bozos and put people in who look to the facts and to bipartisan cooperation.
