They better watch out Obama is planning to increase taxes on gasoline also and then people will be looking everywhere to save money on gasoline.

1 or 2 cents don't seem to be a big deal for the oil companies. They are perfectly happy raising prices 25 cents or more at a time!

I think gas taxes are high enough for now.
Let's add fat taxes instead. Let's tax junk food, fast food restaurants, salty food, greasy food, high calorie food. Make taxes useful again. Tax unhealthy items and let's help make America healthy again ;)

As the oil industry gets richer on our dollars, their profit margin is sending us to the poorhouse.

Politicians and bureaucrats should not be rewarded with tax increases for their overspending and mismanagement. Vote out any incumbent who thinks tax increases are acceptable.

This will cause people to cross city or county lines to get cheaper prices.

The more they tax gas the less people will drive. Just like taxing cigarettes, more people are quitting because of the price which is mostly tax.

The government has run out of new things to tax. We are taxed to death. And until they realize that the economy will continue to decline.

from Oak Lawn to Des Plaines to Glenview — have turned to taxing fuel to make up for plummeting revenue. Elmhurst is considering a 1.5-cent-per-gallon tax and Naperville is weighing whether to add 2 or 3 cents to its 2-cent-per-gallon tax.
The question to ask in this case is, why can't they take up the belt like everyone else. There is only so much money...

I guess it would be too difficult to break it down, from all the gas stations how much taxes are collected and see if it totals what the politicians really tell us is true.

This is an article by the Chicago Tribune about Chicago area taxes.
Twenty years ago Chicago made extreme demands on any gasoline sold in Chicago that caused Chicago gas prices to go so high that very few Chicago stations sold any gas. Most Chicago residents are out of Chicago at least once each week and they bought their gas in the suburbs, maybe a couple of gallons in Chicago just to last until they were out of Chicago to buy gas.
Now suburbs will follow suit and chase their business away too.

Seems that is the answer to all governing bodies, large and small. If they need money, they impose a tax or raise one. Here in this small town of Jacksonville, Or. The people voted down a bond for the fire department and the police so the city implemented a $20 safety fee a month on your water bill and $3/month parks fee on top of your basic service fee and usage more than doubling our water bills.

By raising the tax on fuels in a town, it drives the pump price up and drives away business to nearby places without the tax... yet another short-sighted idea by the very dummies who have taxed people too hard already. Municipalities should have to live within their means just like their taxpayers do. Cut services, not raise taxes.

this site will become even more valuable in determining where the truly cheapest gas per gallon currently is, as the local governments finally figure out they will have to shrink their budegts big time.

"With the cost of gasoline expected to surpass $3 a gallon this summer..........."
It is getting difficult to find a station selling gas for less than $3.00 a gallon and we are only one day into spring.

Where I live the price seems to be controlled by the number of available stations.
If there are more than 1 station, the prices will be more competitive, while single stations with no obvious competition will jack prices up.
A good example: a station with another within sight sells for $2.67 versus a stand alone station about 1/4 mile away selling for 17 cents more. While all three stations are different brand names, I have seen them all serviced by the SAME TRUCK.
