This may cost them one months profit, if they lose.

The people who shout "greed" about oil companies are strangely quiet when it comes to the trial lawyers going after big companies. Quien es mas macho?

They should be forced to clean up the mess; however, $27Billions sounds like a lot of money for something they can't prove. This is another case of ambulance chaser spreading out across the world. The lawyers will make out better than the average person involved will after they split the money up, if they win at all.

I hope they are forced to clean up the mess as well as paying a hefty fine.

Reactions to this story appear to be based upon the political persuasion of the reader. Vehement name calling addressed to the oil industry or raising the stereotype of U.S. attorneys as ambulance chasers suggest more can be known about the poster than what the article can tell about a case that has not gone to trial yet.

This is a great idea for the Amazonians. But what lawyer with a brilliant plan went to the Amazonian tribes and taught them what it was to sue anybody? It is a truly brilliant plan but another reason why a lot of people have bad opinions of lawsuit lawyers. Apparently they could find enough work anywhere else.

Those high paid Chevron lawyers are going to earn their money.
I wonder if we can sue our government over "toxic spending"?

We will pay the price for this by having oil and gas prices go up.

Since the BIG OIL BILLIONAIRES say there is no connection between this polluted water and land and the health problems, I am willing to donate to a fund to have the polluted water shipped to their HOMES for DRINKING and WASHING ....let us see if the OIL BILLIONAIRES remain quite so complacent about OIL POLLUTION when THEY are forced to DRINK the stuff.
Oh, that's right, under US LAW, that would be considered CRUEL and UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT to be forced to drink black oily TOXIC water.
What do you want to bet that ALL of the OIL BILLIONAIRES and COAL BARONS have VERY expensive fancy water filtering systems in their HOMES and OFFICES?
FROM THE ARTICLE:
The Ecuadorean claimants said the company illegally dumped toxic waste from its oil production, which filtered into the lakes used by thousands of people for washing and drinking.
The result, they claimed, was one of the worst environmental disasters in history, which led to a public health crisis with rising levels of cancer, birth defects and miscarriages.
Some 30,000 Amazonians are behind a case to be heard by an Ecuadorean judge. Experts said the company might have to pay damages of up to $US27 billion ($29 billion).
The company said there was no proof that any illnesses were caused by its operations. It said the responsibility for cleaning the area lay with the Ecuadorean government and Petroecuador, the state oil company.
The court case is the result of the exploitation of the indigenous population by US trial lawyers and a corrupt government, according to Chevron.
The Amazon campaign has attracted high-profile supporters including actor Daryl Hannah. Chevron's reputation for corporate social responsibility has already taken a blow.
The issue is the subject of Crude, a critically acclaimed documentary. The rags-to-riches tale of the most senior Ecuadorean lawyer fighting the case has earnt it a place on the front cover of Vanity Fair.
Texaco, which is owned by Chevron, started operating in Sucumbios, Ecuador, in 1964. Over 26 years it made more than $500 million, producing 1.7 billion barrels of oil. As the operator of a consortium with Petroecuador, it drilled hundreds of wells.

Did Chevron give the approval to drill? What is the responsibility of the South American countries that were getting rich?

I just have to shake my head and wonder who ever thought that their actions drilling like this would be OK. The lack of caring, respect, and forethought is sickening. People who allow this or create the circumstances for this should be forced to work in the field for the rest of their life cleaning it up...all the way up the chain of command.
Let's not forget that everyone's demand for oil is what creates pressure to extract in this manner.. cheaply (at the moment).

The fact that a NON-US entity can come to the USA and use our courts really ticks me off. And the people that will get picked for the jusy (at no pay) should tell the people from Brazil or where ever they are from to piss up a rope.

Ya, but their judicial system will get paid off - AGAIN, and I doubt Chevron will ever pay one penny.... Big corporations are the NEW DICTATORS, forget about hitler, we have CHEVRON!!!!! They can do whatever they want, wherever they want, whenever they want and NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!! This is not new news, this is OLD NEWS, Chevron and other oil/gas companies have been screwing up the environment for decades, why would they stop now?!?!?! They have more income than the whole entire GDP of Ecuador.... What does that tell you???

Don't blame them. Chevron should do the right thing and clean it up - not blow more $$$ on lawyers. This affects the whole world.
