The Mazda 6 with the 4 cylinder engine requires you to replace a canister oil filter instead of a spin on filter. Mazda requires a special tool to remove the cap in order to replace the oil filter. I was able to obtain the tool through Mazda after about a month due to being on back order. The tool required to perform the filter change is part number AKS75140 and is available through your Mazda dealer. Is anyone aware of an after market tool that is available to preform the oil filter change?

MATCO tools carries a filter tool for the Mazda/Ford 2.3 litre. I just ordered one yesterday.

I wish there was a little jerk-off emoticon.

Hmm, I find it hard to believe that changing the style of oil filter would void the warranty, when mazda cannot even figure out how to keep oil in the V6 engine. BTW, if you have the V6, always check your oil after a change ;)

I do not claim to know anything about warranty work, but don't they have to prove that the modification affected the part that is to be fixed under warranty. For example, you change your oil filter style... two days later, your fuel sensor cacks and gives you a rich mixture that spontaneously combusts (knock) and buggers up your engine. I do not think that is caused by the new oil filter, thus they cannot deny warranty work.

Maybe I am mistaken, make sure you look into it fully before doing it. I have the V6 so I do not have to worry about this mod.

Don't give your stealership any reason to void your warranty, as they will!

I asked my local Mazda dealer about this modification because I also found out about it through the Mazda 6 car club website. They told me that performing this modification would void my warranty on the engine because it was not a factory authorized modification.

If you check out www.mazda6club.com they give a pretty simle mod to convert the cannister filter to a normal spin on filter.

Check it out. You should be able to access it from the front page.
