There has to be something good about it as it is 4th best selling car in the U.S. through 6 months of the year.

Being plain lends it to being cheap and one thing that fleet cars need to be is cheap. Especially that they typically sell at close to marginal cost in order to maintain production volume.

Sorry didn't know that the Impala 2006 topic was already in use. I posted this earlier, but felt I should post it here too.
I bought a 2006 Impala at the end of 2005. The car stalls and I was putting my life in jeopardy driving the silly thing. I first reported the problem to Applewood Chev. in January, but when I took a drive with the service guy..... I didn't act up. (Murphy's Law) Yesterday I gave them my car to drive for a few days and get an oil change. My car is now documented as having a known problem with NO resolution.
As I was abused by my previous Impala for 6 years..... and that I was only 3 months of abuse with this one..... I called GMPP to tell them my sob story including the fact that I was advised today when I picked up my vehicle...... To drive it with extreme caution!!!!!!
The 3 month old car with only 6.4K's on it was towed away and I was provided with another rental...... YUP..... the same Impala I dropped off this afternoon.
If you know anyone with a 2006 Impala who has been complaining of the car potentially stalling when turning or leaving a stop...... Please have them call GM. TAC Case #8854705 is on record. I am the 2 vehicle apparently reported with this problem.... and nothing will be done unless they have more complaints.

THe new IMPALA is Awesome. In reards to fuel economy - after 3000 mile break in - like all vehicles - reset the average fuel economy and you should see the numbers on the sticker

Just purchased an 06 Impala SS two weeks ago. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in...
a) It DOES NOT get the advertised economy. Even when babied. I took it down an open highway on cruise control for 2 hours...
b) Torque steering is not an issue... on dry pavement. Slippery conditions are a bit of a different story. However: It handles quite nicely in the snow (stock tires).
c) The DOD technology seems to work best at CITY speeds (I've gone up a hill, while accelerating... using 4 cylinders. I've also been going down a highway, with a strong headwind, at 120 km/h, with the DOD stuck in 8 cylinder mode).
d) To get rid of another rumour: The suspension upgrades really assist getting the 303 hp to the pavement. It accelerates as if it were RWD (Trust me, I owned a 95 Impala SS before).

The reason why cars like the Impala or the Ford 300 are so "plain" is for fleet sales. A outragiously styled car just does not go over big when used for deliver or salesman vehicles.

The 06 Impala is as ugly as an 05 GTO. And that is plain!
GM might sell a few cars if they would put a little effort into styling like the old days.

303 HP going to the front wheels is really kind of silly if you think about it.

Quite bland but I do like the option of a V-8 though the old 3800 works just fine. Fornt drive, ditch it please ditch it and lose the plastic interior parts and fake wood. I have been a lifetime GM owner and will NEVER veer from the General. I actually would give the nod to the Malibu SS with 240 hp 3.9 V-6. Test drove it, quick! But I'll stay with my '05 Grand Prix. Like Deno said, the 3.8 does the job well enough! Simplicity over gimmickry works in this case!

I seel them and they are great - great torque and great gas milage - the Displacement on Demand is seemless it only shuts down the 4 cyl when you are cruising and when you need the power it automatically goes back to all 8! Let me know what info you want I can get it for you.

It is blandly styled. It looks like a Honda Accord from the front. I miss the 1985 Impala. It was my favorite!

Yeah, its pretty neat. I'm just sad the car is so blandly styled and is still FWD. That 303 HP is pretty useless going to the front wheels.
I'm a much bigger fan of the new Hemi Dodge Charger. It's also got DOD, and puts its power to the right set of wheels. One of these will likely be the replacement for my LT1-powered Caprice in the future, unless used GTO's become available at reasonable prices.

My '05 has the 3800 and I've never had to press the gas more than halfway. What can you possibly gain from a V8? It certainly isn't fuel economy!

The Displacement on Demand 5.3 liter v8 can run on the E85 and does shut down 4 cyl when you are at cruising speed - I sell them. It is an awesome performer and a great seller - we have been using the DOD engine in the V8 Trailblazer EXT since 2003 - great gas saver and still plenty of power

I saw an ad in the paper somewhere that the 2006 Impala will run on Ethanol 85.

Through complex engine management computers, and the ability to shut down cylinders when not needed. Shutting down cylinders means consuming less fuel, thereby saving fuel. But if you have a heavy foot, the system is somewhat useless because it only shuts down the cylinders when you driving conservatively. When you stomp the gas, the other cylinders re-activate, and you've got full power. It really depends on the driver to what your fuel savings will be.
My only gripe about the car is the drivetrain. They had to limit the HP numbers to 303 because the FWD transmission would tank if the engine made any more power. If they would have made the car RWD, like the should have, then this wouldn't be an issue. Then they could have easily been pushing 350hp, and competing nicely with the Chrysler 300.
Hope this helps, a little article on DOD (Displacement On Demand) http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jk/041020.htm

It is the same tech that the Jeep Cherrikees have I guess It is done by the brain to help get better fuel milage on the hwy. if you cruise at the same speed if you give it more gas the brain then kicks on the extra cyls
