I visited Victoria, BC as a port-of-call on a Pacific Northwest cruise on Holland America's flagship ms Amsterdam. HAL, Holland America Line, attracts an older crowd but some of these seniors are more active than the younger folks aboard this cruise. I think a cruise is a great way to get a sampling of many destinations for later more extended stays. You only have to unpack and pack once as the ship is transportation, lodging, restaurants, and entertainment all in one.
Holland America Arranged for Gray Line buses to pick us up at the port in Victoria, and also transport us to Butchart Gardens. It's amazing how tapped out old quarries can be transformed into sunken gardens.
The mining industry should take a cue from Mrs. Butchart. When a quarry or strip mine is tapped out, it could be re-terraformed and turned into parkland. I think that's a lot better then leaving a gaping hole in the ground.

Yes the gardens are outstanding however don't go looking for the ferry to "Victoria Island" because there isn't one. It's "Vancouver Island" and the main city and capital of British Columbia is Victoria. You can take the Tswassen ferry to Shwartz Bay just North of Victoria, and then on the return trip, drive up the island to Nanaimo and take the ferry back to the mainland to Horseshoe Bay on the North side of Vancouver. A nice circle tour. Lots to see and do on the mainland.

Enjoy the ferry ride and then take the double decker bus to Victoria.

We went there in August last year and spent an afternoon and evening. Seeing the Gardens in the dusk hours was quite different. I recommend seeing it in the different lights.

We have just returned from Vancouver, Victoria and Butchert Gardens.
Adult admission is $25 and worth every penny. I didn't think it would be worth the price until I went either.
My son who doesn't care at all about gardens or gardening wanted to go and loved it too
They told us the fireworks begins at summer. We missed it just a day or so.

Very pretty gardens. The story of how it started with Mrs. Butchart and expanded by the grandson is even more interesting.

I am going to visit Victoria in August but I won't pay $44.00 to walk through any garden.

We were there in 2002, but I don't remember it costing THAT much. Maybe we had a discount or special. I think my friend used his AAA card and coupons too.

I had never thought something could be so beautiful. My fiancee & I went to the Butchart Gardensand I was totally blown away. I figured "Sure, gardens and flowers, neat." But nothing prepares you for the utter beauty of the place. You have to have at least 2 hours to see everything - more if you plan on taking your time & pictures.
