I know that this will get a lot of differing opinions, but I believe it is time to address the issue.

My slant: I have been watching hockey since the 1950s. A lot of games and a lot of fights. I never gave them much thought, but with the new medical data coming out about the long term, even deadly, affects of these fights, I think it has to end. I really would like to see the arranged fights go away first. They are stupid and only serve to delay the game. Watching Brandon Prust drop his gloves with an opponent as soon as the puck is dropped is ridiculous (yes, I am a Ranger fan) and I think merits a game misconduct. I am there to see a game played with speed, skill and physicality. If I want to see a fight. can go to boxing matches and see a better bout.

I would not be upset if all fights were gone from the game, but especially the "planned" fights should be cause for being thrown out of the game. They are dumb! It has little affect on the game when two thugs take each other off the ice. All they do is stop the game while they dance around trying to break their hands on their opponents helmet.

Sadly as a fan of the team, too many Ranger fights involving Brandon Prust are of the staged variety. I'd much rather see Gaborik shooting the puck or Lundqvist making an acrobatic save than this nonsense.

...but hasn't it sort of gone the way of the dinosaur anyhow? First-NHL rosters as as such that you can't really employ a handless-goon any longer, so fights aren't what they used to be anyhow. THEN you have teams (alas---like my Red Wings) that the closest thing to a fight is forcing some dude on the other team to sniff the palm of your glove while face-washing him.
Don't get me wrong, there is still some entertainment value to a good NHL fight, but it's not quite Probert/Coxe any longer.

Completely agree with you. But as we can see in the number of answers, fights are very popular. People become excited as soon as there's a fight and I think that's one of reasons why fights are still there. It's a shame though, as hockey is the only sport where fights are tolerated. In any other sport, you're out immediately, even if you're one of the greatest (look at Zidane in world cup)

Yes, I agree with the two previous posters 100%. Enough is enough.

Yes 100% agreed. No more goons...the spontaneous fights coming from normal game play may still be tolerable as a five minute major.

definitely the elephant in the room. I would hate to see it go, but.............it will. we might as well prepare ourselves for that inevitability. the staged fights are a joke though. the "truth or consequences" types I can live with. the ultimate question is, can the players live with them.
