Once "The Chase" starts, let the 10 (or however many) "Chase" drivers have their own point system so that they're only competing against each other. A suggestion for point allocation among Chase drivers:

1) 60 points (highest finisher)
2) 50 (2nd highest finisher)
3) 45
4) 40
5) 35
6) 30
7) 25
8) 20
9) 15
10) 10
11-19) subtract 1 for each position (if there are more than 10 in the Chase)

Extra bonus points:
25 for a race win
10 for actually finishing in positions 2-5 (of the 43 cars)
5 for actually finishing in positions 6-10 (of the 43 cars)
5 for leading the most laps

This would not only create competition among the Chase drivers without the hefty points penalty imposed now for a bad finish, but also reward them for for winning or finishing near the top of the entire field. I think this would create a lot more wide-open, aggressive driving among the Chase drivers as they fought for a win rather than driving conservatively to ensure a "decent" finish.

How about this for Driver points. Wins=80, 2-5=40, 6-10=20, 11-20=10, poles=10, and 5 points for being in the race. Owner points to stay the same as today. Under this system the top drivers can get into the chase even if they have some real bad races. For 2005 the chase drivers were
Stewart, Biffle, R Wallace, Johnson, Kurt Busch, Martin, Mayfield, Kenseth, Edwards, and Newman. My point system.
Stewart, Biffle, Johnson, Edwards, Martin, Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Newman, J Gordon, and R Wallace. As you can see J Gordon would have made it in and Mayfield would have been out, and the order would have changed some. The same system could also be used for the chase. Still have some fine tuning of the system, but most will ubderstand it.

Very nice format IndyGlenn!, I like the 'bonus' points where winning and/or finishing in the top 10 pays dividends! I thought is was racing not point chasing

NASCAR has not be consistent or logical this year at all ... you guys hit the nail on the head and drove it through the board ... IndyGlenn, I like the points system you came up with ... it works and it's fair

Today you are right, but they were logical back in the days of Bill and Bill Jr. Both cut their teeth promoting great races, no matter who won, and who got into fights. Brian on the other hand seems to be getting paid something by Hendricks and/or Roush. And Hinton and Darby seem not to be doing their jobs.

racefan43, "NASCAR" and "logic" are oxymorons.

I like it, but will Nascar. Your system is logical, and Nascar has not done the logical thing since Brian France took over from his father.
